WHAT IS THE HONEYWELL PX940?
The Honeywell PX940 is a family of extremely precise "4 inch" 203dpi, 300dpi and 600dpi Thermal Transfer printers. Some models come with a factory fitted 1D/2D barcode verifier.
The models with the verifier are referred to as PX940V.
Models without the Verifier are collectively known as PX940A.
WHERE IS THE PX940 USED?
The PX940A is typically used where extreme accuracy is required to print barcodes on small labels.
The PX940V is typically used in retail label applications where maintaining barcode quality is of prime importance.
WHERE DOES THE PX940 FIT?
The PX940 is part of the line up of Honeywell industrial barcode printers and sits alongside the PX45 and PX65.
None of the other Honeywell printers offer integrated barcode verification or can match the extreme printing accuracy.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE PX940?
The PX940V has an integrated barcode verifier.
All of the PX940 models have extreme printing accuracy.
HOW DOES THE PX940V BARCODE VERIFIER WORK?
Barcode Verifiers are special sensors which make quantitative measurements of barcodes.
The PX940V has an integrated barcode verifier which checks the barcode quality against ISO/IEC 15416-2016 for 1D barcodes and ISO/IEC 15415-2011 for 2D codes.
The barcode verifier is positioned immediately after the printhead.
The verfier checks up to 32 barcodes on each label. If the verifier fails any of the barcodes the printer withdraws the label and prints over the label with a grid pattern and reissues the label. It then attempts to reprint the label.
Details of fails and barcode quality are stored within the PX940V and Verification Reports are readily accessible.
WHAT TYPES OF BARCODE CAN THE PX940V PRINT AND VERIFY?
The PX940V can only verify barcodes produced by the printer.
It cannot be used to verify barcodes produced by other means.
The minimum barcode size supported is 10mil for 1D barcodes and 15mil for 2D barcodes.

The PX940 has a 3.5 inch full touch colour screen and a web page.
WHAT PRINT RESOLUTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE PX940?
PX940 Printer models are available in three print resolutions:
- 203 dpi. This resolution is used for general purpose applications
- 300dpi. This resolution produces fine print and is typically used for images and standard size EAN13 retail barcodes
- 600dpi. This resolution gives even finer print and is used for tiny text and high density barcodes
It is possible to convert the printer to a different resolution simply by swapping the printhead.
The maximum speed depends on the resolution.

WHAT CONNECTION OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE PX940?
All PX940 printers can be connected using USB, RS232 and Ethernet cables.
Parallel and Wi-Fi are available as options.

WHAT LABELS AND RIBBONS CAN THE PX940 USE?
LABEL MEDIA
The PX940 can print on TT label media with the aid of a ribbon or on DT label media without a ribbon.
The PX940 has adjustable label sensors which means that the label media can be:
- Self-adhesive die-cut labels with gaps
- Self-adhesive butt-cut labels without gaps and with under-printed black marks
- Non-adhesive tags punched with holes or slots
- Non-adhesive tags under-printed with black marks
- Continuous stationery, for example receipt paper
The PX940 internally houses rolls of labels with an outside diameter of up to 213mm.
Most models need the core diameter to be 76mm.
One model needs a core diameter of 38mm.
Alternatively fanfolded stationery may be used. This is held outside the printer and is fed through access slots in the bottom or the rear of the printer.
The label media width can be from 25.4 to 114mm.
The maximum printable width and length depend on the resolution.

THERMAL TRANSFER RIBBONS
The PX940 can print on Thermal Transfer media with the aid of a ribbon.
Ribbons can be Wax, Wax/Resin or Resin.
The ribbons are 51mm to 110mm wide. The ribbons are on 25.4mm cores and can be inside or outside wound.
The maximum outside diameter of the ribbon is 80mm which corresponds to a ribbon length of about 450m.
WHAT LABEL PRINTING SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE FOR THE PX940?
Most label printers are used in conjunction with Label Printing Software packages.
An example of labelling software is Bartender Ultra Lite for Honeywell which can be downloaded free of charge.

Labelling software applications send commands in languages which are known to the printer.
If you wish you can use these printer languages directly.
The available languages for this printer are:
- Intermec Direct Protocol
- Intermec IPL 203 and 300dpi only.
- Zebra ZPL
- Datamax DPL
WHAT CAN THE PX940 PRINT ON THE LABELS?
The PX940 prints monochrome text, barcodes and graphics.
The legibility of small print depends on the printhead resolution, 600dpi being the best option.
The PX940 comes with a range of resident fonts and additional fonts can be downloaded.
A wide range of 1D and 2D barcodes is available.
The printer supports PCX, PNG, GIF and BMP file formats.
WHAT MEDIA HANDLING IS AVAILABLE FOR THE PX940?
TEAR OFF
Some PX940 printer configurations come with no special media handling and the printed label media is torn off by pulling downwards against the tear bar.
PEEL OFF WITH LINER REWIND
This is also called Self-Strip Mode.
This mode requires a factory fitted option which includes a label taken sensor and a rewind spindle.
The self-adhesive label stationery is threaded through the printer, a few labels are removed from the end of the roll and the loose end of the liner is wound around a core on the rewind spindle.
When the label is printed the label partly peels on the tear bar and waits for its removal by the user. The process is monitored by the label taken sensor and when the label has been removed the next printed label is presented and the spent liner is taken up on the rewind spindle.
The label stationery will normally be self-adhesive labels with gaps.
BATCH REWIND
In this mode the internal rewind option is required and a rewind plate is used to cover the tear off bar.
The label stationery is threaded under the printhead, over the rewind plate and spooled onto the rewind spindle.
The printed label stationery is collected on the rewind spindle.
WHAT ADVANCED FEATURES DOES THE PX940 HAVE?
The following advanced features are available.
INTERMEC FINGERPRINT AND C#
Fingerprint and C# can be used with the PX940 printer.
These Smart printer languages allow the printer to run applications and do not depend on the connection to a host.
Please note that C# programs cannot be used while the PX940V is verifying barcodes.
USB HOST PORTS
All PX940 printers come with two USB Host ports.
They can be used to connect USB keyboards, USB barcode scanners and USB storage.
ADDITIONAL CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS
These additional connectivity options are available as add-ons for the PX940A or the PX94OV.

LABELS
PX940 printers work with thermal transfer (TT) or direct thermal (DT) media.
TT media needs a ribbon. DT does not.

Honeywell is in the process of discontinuing the Intermec range of label media for desktop, mid-range and industrial printers and are not yet offering alternative products.

Our standard charge for 2-3 day delivery to most locations in mainland UK is £10.
