GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Zebra ZD420 is a family of Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer 4" Desktop label printers which is intended to replace the GK420 Series printers.
There are three versions each of which come as General Purpose and Healthcare variants
- ZD420d General Purpose and ZD420d-hc Healthcare DT only
- ZD420c General Purpose and ZD420c-hc Healthcare Ribbon Cartridge TT
- ZD420t General Purpose and ZD420t-hc Healthcare Ribbon Roll DT/TT
where DT and TT are short-hand for Direct Thermal (no ribbon) and Thermal Transfer (uses a ribbon).
The ZD420 comes with a wide range of wired and wireless communication options. These include USB, USB Host, Ethernet, Serial, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4,1, Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC).
Label media can be in rolls up to 127mm (5") outside diameter on 0.5" or 1" cores or fan-folded.
Media handling is flexible with tear-off plus peel and cutting options which can be installed by the user.
The cartridge printer uses a drop-in ribbon cartridge which is 110mm wide and 74m long. The TT printer handles both 74m and 300m long ribbons with notched cores and comes with a pair of Zebra Ribbon Core Adaptors for 300m ribbons without notches.
In addition there is a range of accessories which include a Battery Pack for cordless working, Core Adapters for more sizes, Cutter and Label Dispenser Kits, Printhead Conversion Kits to change the printer resolution, Mounting Kits to secure the printer and a KDU for stand-alone applications.
Healthcare versions are available in white casings which are antiseptic ready and, in some cases, lockable. All Healthcare printers come with special medical grade external power supplies.
DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT
The ZD420c and ZD420c-hc measure 177mm (7") x 202mm (8") x254mm (10.00) (H X W X L) and weigh 2.3kg (5lb).
The ZD420d and ZD420d-hc measure 150.7mm (5.93") x 177.5mm (6.98") x 220.8mm (8.69") (H x W x L) and weigh 1.6kg (3.6lb).
The ZD420t and ZD420t-hc measure 192mm (7.5") x 202mm (8") x 267mm (10.5") (H x W x L) and weigh 2.4kg (5.3lb).
MEDIA HANDLING OPTIONS
The ZD420 offers a choice of the following media handling options:
TEAR-OFF
Tear-Off is the standard media handling arrangement.
The label media is fed through the printer and after passing under the printhead the printed media emerges from the front of the printer.
The printed label media can be removed by pulling against a tear bar.
The minimum label height for ZD420 printers with tear-off is 6.4mm (0.25").
CUTTER
In this arrangement a cutter unit is fitted to the front of the printer.
The printed label media passes through this unit and is cut across into individual pieces.
The minimum label height for ZD420 printers with a Cutter is 25.4mm (1").
LABEL PEEL
In this arrangement a peeler unit is fitted to the front of the printer.
The label is partly separated from the backing and the part peeled label projects from the front of the printer.
When the part peeled label is removed by the operator the printer prints the next label.
The minimum label height for ZD420 printers with a Peeler is 12.7mm (0.5").
LABEL MEDIA
The ZD420 can handle rolls of label stationery up to 127mm (5") outer diameter.
As standard the media roll core inner diameter is 12.7mm (0.5") or 25.4mm (1").
Optional media roll adapters are available for 38.1mm (1.5"), 50.8mm (2.0") and 76.2mm (3.0") cores Alternatively label media can be fed into the printer via a slot in the rear of the printer.
MEDIA WIDTH
- ZD420c 15mm (0.585") to 118mm (4.65")
- ZD420d 15mm (0.585") to 108mm (4.25")
- ZD420t 15mm (0.585") to 118mm (4.65")
MAXIMUM PRINTABLE WIDTH
The maximum printable width depends on the printer resolution:
- 203dpi 104mm (4.09")
- 300dpi 108mm (4.27")
MINIMUM LABEL LENGTH
The minimum label length depends on the media handling method:
- tear-off 6.35mm (0.25")
- dispensing 12.7mm (0.50")
- cutter 25.4mm (1")
MAXIMUM LABEL LENGTH
The maximum label length is 990mm (39").
THERMAL TRANSFER RIBBONS
The ZD420t Thermal Transfer models use 74m or 300m long rolls of ribbon on 12.7mm (0.5") or 25.4mm (1") cores.
The ribbons can be 33.8mm (1.33") to 109.2mm (4.3") wide.
The ribbon outside diameter is 66mm (2.6") for 300m or 34mm (1.34") for 74m.
The ZD420t printer cannot use ribbon cartridges.
The ZD420c uses 110mm wide 74m long ribbon cartridges which can be loaded into the printer in a few seconds.
The ZD420c printer cannot use rolls of printer ribbon.
COMMUNICATIONS OPTIONS
All models of the ZD420 come with USB and USB Host.
Some models have Low Energy Bluetooth BTLE and Print Touch (NFC).
USB Host is used to upgrade the printer with a USB drive. It is not suitable for USB barcode scanners.
BTLE is a low energy short range version of Bluetooth for mobile computers.
Print Touch is a very short range communication system for NFC enabled Android devices.
Factory fitted options include 10/100 Wired Ethernet or a dual radio with Wi-Fi 802.11ac and v4.1 Bluetooth (Classic).
Bluetooth v4.1 has a working range of up to 100m.
Field installable options include 10/100 Wired Ethernet or Serial.
Where a configuration has both 10/100 Wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi these can be used concurrently.
MEMORY AND REAL TIME CLOCK
All of the printers come with 512MB of Flash Memory.
Some models have a Real Time Clock.

The Battery Pack provides mobile power for the ZD420 printer.
Typical applications include placing the printer on a cart and working in a location where it is not possible to connect to mains power.
